Fix the accessibility failures that Lighthouse finds on WordPress
Why it matters
A low Lighthouse accessibility score means many problems that stop people using screen readers, keyboards or low vision settings, such as unnamed buttons, images without alt text and weak contrast. Fixing the failing audits helps all visitors, and accessibility is often required for public sites.
The fix
- Add alt text to images in the Media Library and in the block editor's image settings. Mark decorative images as decorative, and check logos and icons in the theme.
- Choose an accessibility-ready theme (the theme directory has an Accessibility Ready tag) and keep it updated. Check the colours in the Customizer or Site Editor, and label every form field in your form plugin.
- Be careful with accessibility overlay widgets. They do not repair the underlying markup and can get in the way of screen reader users, so fix the theme and content instead.
- Update plugins that print inaccessible forms, sliders or popups, or replace them, and test with the keyboard.
