Renew the expired domain registration now
Why it matters
The registry shows the domain registration has expired, and the website and email can stop at any moment, or already have. The longer it stays expired the greater the risk that someone else registers it.
The fix
- Log in to the registrar where the domain is registered. If you do not know which, look the domain up on an RDAP or whois service, which names the registrar.
- Renew the domain immediately, and prefer several years. Fees may be higher after expiry, since many registrars add a restoration fee once the grace period ends.
- If you cannot log in, use the registrar's account recovery now, and check the registrant email address on file. Reminder emails often go to an address nobody reads.
- Turn on automatic renewal and put a current payment method on it.
- After renewing, confirm the domain status in a few hours and check that the website, mail and nameservers work as before. Look at the other registration findings too.
bash
# no whois command? Look the domain up at https://lookup.icann.org/ instead whois example.com | grep -i -E "registrar|expir|status"
The examples use example.com. Replace it with your own domain.
