Serve security.txt from /.well-known/

hygiene.security_txt.legacy_location · effort: minutes

Why it matters

RFC 9116 puts the file at /.well-known/security.txt and keeps /security.txt only for older setups. Researchers and tools look in the standard place first.

The fix

  1. Make the same file available at https://example.com/.well-known/security.txt over https as text/plain; charset=utf-8. Serving it directly is simplest; a redirect is allowed.
  2. Set the Canonical line to the new address, then keep or remove the old /security.txt copy. If you keep it, keep both files identical.
