Point the canonical link at your own domain
Why it matters
The homepage names another domain as its original, which tells search engines to show that site instead of yours. It is a common leftover from a staging site or a domain move.
Staged change. Do this in stages and check each one before the next, so a mistake does not break your site or your mail.
The fix
- Check that the link is not deliberate. A site that republishes content from another source on purpose may point there, but a homepage that does so is almost always a mistake.
- Change the canonical to the preferred address on your own domain, find where it came from (a base URL setting, an environment variable, a template), and fix it at the source.
- Request a fresh look at the homepage in the URL Inspection tool of Google Search Console after the change.
html
<link rel="canonical" href="https://example.com/"> The examples use example.com. Replace it with your own domain.
