Add a title to the homepage

seo.basics.title_missing · effort: minutes

Why it matters

The title is the headline of your search result and the label of the browser tab, so a page without one looks unfinished and ranks worse. Search engines will make up a title if you do not write one.

The fix

  1. Add one title element inside the head of the homepage. Describe the page in plain words and put the most important words first, with the brand name at the end or the start.
  2. Keep it short enough to read at a glance (about 60 characters is a common guide, as search engines truncate long titles), and make it different on every page.
  3. If a script sets the title, it should also be in the html the server sends, so crawlers that do not run scripts see it.
