Check that the canonical link names the right host on WordPress

seo.basics.canonical_other_host · effort: minutes

Why it matters

The canonical link names a different host of your domain than the one the page was served from, for example a staging or old subdomain. If that is not deliberate, search engines index the other host instead of this one.

The fix

  1. Open Settings, General and check that WordPress Address and Site Address use the host you want visitors to see. A staging or old subdomain there is copied into the canonical.
  2. Also check the canonical field of your SEO plugin, then clear caches.

Scan your domain to see whether this applies to you.
